Downtown Spartanburg is on the brink of a significant transition as a beloved 200-space free parking lot prepares to shut its gates for good on October 5. Nearby Morgan Square, a hub for shopping and dining, will soon witness the full impact of this change. Many regulars, like local resident Megan Davis, are expressing their surprise and concern over losing their go-to parking spot: "It was always nice. Right near all the shops and everything. So it was pretty convenient for us to park here," she shared.

Future Development: The Joint City-County Building

This closure is a necessary step towards the construction of a new joint city-county government complex, which will also include a substantial parking garage with approximately 900 spaces set to be built within the next couple of years. Christopher George from the City of Spartanburg assured residents that the city is making strides to mitigate the disruption. All city parking garages will remain free for the first two hours, and free access beyond 5 PM continues to be an option, especially on weekends.

As part of their efforts, the city highlights that their parking garages, such as the underutilized Magnolia Street Garage with 600 spaces, can accommodate many of those displaced by the lot's closure. With free monthly garage passes for downtown employees through the end of the year, the city aims to alleviate some concerns while encouraging the use of these facilities. Additionally, a new shuttle service will be introduced to facilitate transportation between these garages and the downtown area.
